ARTIST'S STATEMENT: My work seeks to explore the tension between realism and abstraction, using color to both guide the former and accentuate the latter. I prefer to have the color float on top of the canvas rather than create a deep texture. By dry brushing and sponging acrylics, wet on wet, I am able to blur the edges and create shadow, thereby achieving an etheric or mystical effect.



As shapes connect in my paintings, they draw attention to what appearas to emerge as a figure or landscape. I then use deep shadows to define the spaces between objects. In this way, I hope to suggest boundaries or parameters, while allowing viewers to use their imagination to develop the context or "story" of and within the painting. Overall, my art reflects an effort to impose agency or control over a particular painting, while at the same time, allowing myself the freedom to give way to change and circumstance. In this way, my artwork is an outward, emotional expression of my attempt to achieve a similar balance in life.
